Bridgestone will send 1,400 workers home from Des Moines tire plant
Des Moines Register: Bridgestone is sending about 1,400 workers home from its Des Moines agricultural tire manufacturing plant for two weeks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, beginning Sunday morning. It’s the first major Iowa production facility to shut down due to the coronavirus, which causes the respiratory illness COVID-19. Bridgestone Americas said Thursday it’s closing all North and South American facilities to protect the health of employees during the pandemic.

California orders its nearly 40 million residents to stay home
CNN: The nation’s most populous state is ordering its nearly 40 million residents to stay home to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus. Nineteen people have died and more than 900 tested positive for coronavirus in California. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order marks the first statewide mandatory restrictions in the United States to help combat the outbreak. Californians should not leave home except for essential things such as food, prescriptions, health care and commuting to jobs considered crucial.

N.Y. state has more than 40% of U.S. coronavirus cases
New York Times: New York City now has about 4,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and 26 people have died from the virus, Mayor Bill de Blasio said this morning. “We now constitute 30% of the coronavirus cases in the United States of America, 70% of the cases in the state of New York,” de Blasio said on MSNBC. “We have to take really intense, radical action right away.” The 5,298 cases in New York state are by far the most of any state in the country and make up more than 40% of the nationwide total of over 12,000. New York state has only 6% of the country’s population.

Walmart wants to hire 150,000 temporary workers as pandemic continues
CNN: Walmart, the largest private employer in the United States, plans to hire 150,000 temporary workers by the end of May as the coronavirus pandemic continues to sweep through the country. The company said it is hiring the associates to work in stores, clubs, distribution centers and fulfillment centers.
