A majority of Americans — 88% — are confident the country will get through the COVID-19 outbreak, according to the newest edition of the Grinnell College National Poll. The poll, a partnership between Grinnell College and J. Ann Selzer of Selzer & Co., was released this morning. Nearly 7 in 10 respondents say they would stay home without outside physical contact as long as it was asked of them. Twenty-eight percent of all polled Americans report having lost a substantial amount of retirement savings. American adults under age 35 have experienced the greatest financial impact during the outbreak, the poll found: 45% have been laid off or furloughed, 43% report being unable to pay a regular bill, and 57% report losing wages during the outbreak response. Younger workers are more likely to work in the restaurant industry and other service sector jobs that have been dramatically affected by the pandemic.
