Seventy-five restaurant workers have received $250 one-time grants from the Iowa Restaurant Employee Relief Fund, which was started to support people affected by the suspension of on-premise dining during the COVID-19 related shutdown. More than 40,000 restaurant and hotel workers have been laid off since mid-March when the shutdown began. While restaurants are reopening, they cannot yet operate at full capacity. The Iowa Restaurant Association began the relief fund to help workers who had been laid off. Nearly $27,000 has been donated to the fund, according to the association which is still accepting donations. New recipients will be awarded based on the order in which the applications were received. Due to the current wait list of eligible applicants, no additional applications are being taken.
