The Iowa Department of Public Health has confirmed the first death of a child due to health complications from COVID-19, the department announced Sunday. The child was under the age of 5 and had “significant underlying health conditions” before dying in June, the department said. The state medical examiner completed a case investigation on Aug. 6 and IDPH reported the death Sunday evening after taking steps to protect the individual’s identity and notify the family of the medical examiner’s test results.
